St James's Restaurant
Afternoon Tea at St James's Restaurant

A wonderful formal dining experience on the Fourth Floor of Fortnum & Mason and probably the most famous of it's five restaurants. The St. James's focuses on fine seasonal British ingredients cooked to perfection.

There is no better place to enjoy this wonderful English tradition than at St. James’s Restaurant in the world renowned department store Fortnum & Mason. The store was founded in 1707 by William Fortnum, one of Queen Anne’s footmen. During the 1700’s Fortnum and Mason made a name for itself by selling rare teas and spices, not available anywhere else, much like today. Fortnum and Mason has held a number of Royal Warrants over the years, which are reviewed every ten year and still hold the following Royal Warrants: ‘Grocers & Provision Merchants’ by appointment to Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, ‘Tea Merchants and Grocers’ by appointment to H.R.H. The Prince of Wales and ‘Suppliers of Leather and Fancy Goods’ by appointment to H.M. Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother. The store offers a wide variety of luxury goods, but is possibly best known for its luxury food hall with rare delicacies and teas.

The best place to sample traditional Afternoon Tea must be St. James’s Restaurant. This world-renown restaurant with elegant and relaxed atmosphere and settings offers Traditional Afternoon Tea. You will be treated to a fine selection of teas, luxury and traditional sandwiches, pastries and of course a selection of scones with clotted cream and preserves.

Cream tea is considered the regional dish of Devon where the famous clotted cream used in Cream tea originates from. It was most commonly served in the afternoon (around 4pm) after a hard day’s work in the field (or a leisurely stroll around your castle!). Cream Tea consists of clotted Westcountry cream, scones, strawberry jam and of course tea and is a quintessentially English tradition.

The Classic Afternoon Tea Menu is as follows:

Selection of Canapés

Finger Sandwiches and Rolls:
Corn Fed Chicken, Rocket, Wholegrain Mustard Mayonnaise on Granary Bread
Cucumber, Cream Cheese & Watercress on White Bread
Salt Beef & Dijon Mustard on Light Rye Bread
Free Range Egg & Cress Bridge Roll
Oak Smoked Salmon with Herb Crème Fraîche on Rye Sourdough

Fortnum’s Plain and Fruit Scones
