‘There is no more STYLISH, SOPHISTICATED or SATISFYING play to be had in London’

Sunday Telegraph

Written in 1912 George Bernard Shaw’s acclaimed play Pygmalion explores social class and human relationships with a sharp wit and humour. Rupert Everret and Eastenders and Strictly Come dancing star Kara Tointon both star in this classic Theatre Break.

‘The chemistry between Tointon and Everett is electrifying’

Sunday Telegraph

Renowned Professor of Phonetics, Henry Higgins accepts a bet from his friend Colonel Pickering that he can transform the mannerisms and speech patterns of cockney flower girl Eliza Doolittle and pass her off as a lady of society.

‘A beautifully structured play of infinite subtlety’

Guardian

Moving her into his house the Professor works on Eliza’s speech improving her dialect and pronunciation but the two personalities collide as class and gender differences arise. While Mrs Higgins, the professors mother, is concerned about the welfare of Eliza the professor sees it merely as an experiment. Presenting Eliza at the royal ball Professor Higgins wins the bet and leaves Eliza wandering what to do with herself.

Pygmalion the play was adapted into a film in 1938 which inspired the 1956 Broadway production of My Fair Lady. In 1964 the Broadway musical was adapted for screen to become the award winning film My Fair Lady starring Audrey Hepburn and Rex Harrison.

This production of Pygmalion the play is transferring from the Chichester Festival Theatre to London’s Garrick Theatre. Rupert Everret will play the role of Professor Higgins, with Eastenders and Strictly Come dancing star Kara Tointon playing Eliza Doolittle. Diana Riggs takes on the role of Mrs Higgins.

PLEASE NOTE : For the Final weeks of the run of Pygmalion - 15th Aug to 3rd Sept, the role of Professor Henry Higgins will be played by Alistair McGowan.
