William Shakespeare; Translation by Raad Mushatat
Baghdad's Iraqi Theatre Company create a version of Shakespeare's most tragic of plays, Romeo and Juliet, for a new generation. This new production is infused with Iraq's rich traditions of poetry, music and ritual.
Shakespeare's great love story is set against a backdrop of conflict between families, communities and generations. This iconic play finds fresh purchase in the soil of comtemporary Iraq, a country where sectarian strife between Sunni & Shia, ignited and fuelled from the outside, has left the population exhausted by a cycle of violence and reveneged.
