Visit the Banqueting House, the only remaining part of Whitehall Palace where King Charles I was executed. Savour the grandeur and opulence of a bygone era and relax as King James I would have as he stopped by to take refuge from the rigours of Kingship.
The Banqueting House in Whitehall is the only remaining part of Whitehall Palace. Designed by Inigo Jones, renowned architect of the 17th century it witnessed the execution of King Charles I in 1649. A series of nine allegorical paintings by Sir Peter Paul Rubens, commissioned by Charles I in the 17th century adorn the ceiling of the magnificent Mail Hall. The Undercroft where James I came to sup wine and escape from the stresses and strains of Kingship could be said to provide the same opportunity today, albeit without the wine! There are audio guides for visitors as well as a video presentation in the Undercroft telling the history of Whitehall Palace.
