It's 1962 - the 50's are out and change is in the air. Baltimore's Tracy Turnblad, a big girl with big hair and an even bigger heart, has only one passion - to dance. Hairspray opened on Broadway in 2003 and has been a smash hit ever since.
Nigel Planer has joined the cast of Hairspray! As of February 2009 the actor best known for his television role as Neil in 1980s comedy series The Young Ones will play Wilbur Turnblad, husband of Michael Ball’s Edna and father of big-haired teenager Tracy.
Emmerdale actress Verity Rushworth is the second new recruit of the month. She leaves the rural soap that’s been her home from 12 years old to join Hairspray in the role of Penny Pingleton, Tracy’s best friend.
Current stars Michael Ball, Leanne Jones and Ben James-Ellis have all extended their contracts; all confirmed until the 25th July.
