Theatre Breaks News : Ugly Betty Goes Foxy Roxie
Ugly Betty & Emmy Award winning star America Ferrera will have a full make-over when she takes to the London stage early next month playing "foxy" Roxie Hart in the Lawrence Olivier Award winning musical Chicago when it reopens at the Garrick Theatre on 7 November 2011
The 27 year old actress makes her West End debut in Chicago and will star opposite Amra-Faye Wright as tough nut Velma Kelly, a role she is currently playing on Broadway (and previously at the Cambridge Theatre. I’ve seen her – she’s very very good!).
The two stars will help celebrate the start of the show’s 15th year in London on its anniversary on 18 November and Ferrera will be in the show for 8 weeks from 7 November at the Garrick Theatre.
America Ferrera is the latest celebrity to don fishnets as femme fatale, Roxie Hart, following in the footsteps of former supermodel Christie Brinkley (again, I saw her and couldn’t believe she’s in her 50s!!), Destiny’s Child singer Michelle Williams, pop star Ashlee Simpson and actress Brooke Shields.
Chicago opened at the Cambridge Theatre in April 1979 before being revived at the Adelphi Theatre on 18 Nov 1997 then moved back to the Cambridge in April 2006 where it ran for over five years.
Chicago won the 1998 Laurence Olivier Award for Outstanding Musical Production as well as the 1998 Critics’ Circle Award for Best Musical.
Kander and Ebbs 1975 musical is based on the play by Maurine Dallas Watkins and has a book by Fred Ebb and Bob Fosse, music by John Kander and lyrics by Fred Ebb.
