Crazy For You

Crazy For You theatre breaks

Crazy for You is the smash hit Gershwin musical that was never really a Gershwin musical but it certainly has that Gerswing! It returned to London’s West End for the third time following two previous award-winning productions in 2023.

So Ken Ludwig decided that the world needed more Gershwin musicals, so he wrote one: and he was right! With a  riotously entertaining book he jam-packed  2 hrs and 45 minutes  with the most glorious Gershwin melodies (including I Got Rhythm, Someone to Watch Over Me  and They Can’t Take That Away from Me).

So what is it about? It is typical Gershwin fayre!

Theatre-mad Bobby Child is torn between his show-business dreams and running the family bank (“He’s a fish out of water and she’s a real catch”)!

He reluctantly heads west to Deadrock, Nevada, to foreclose on a theatre’s mortgage, only to fall for the theatre owner’s daughter, Polly. Desperate to prove his good faith, Bobby decides to put on a show – complete with dancers from the glamorous Zangler Follies in New York City – to save the theatre, renew the town and hopefully win Polly’s love.

Crazy For You starred Charlie Stemp. He won Best Actor in a Musical in 2017 at the WhatsOnStage Awards and was nominated at the Oliviers for the same role and  for the role of Bobby when he played that role in Mary Poppins in 2020

Carly Anderson, star of Wicked starred as Polly, and Drama Desk Award winner Tom Edden as Bela Zangler.

Susan Stroman’s spectacular production transfered from a sell-out season at the repeatedly brilliant Chichester Festival Theatre.  Stroman (director and choreographor) is a five-time Tony Award winning director and choreographer. Her work has also been honoured with Olivier, Drama Desk, Outer Critics Circle, Lucille Lortel and a record six Astaire Awards. As well as Crazy for You she is known for her work on  Contact, The Scottsboro Boys and The Producers
