‘Michael Mayer’s vivancious production has wit, charmand energy, sparkly choreography, and a strong, ebullient cast (Financial Times)
Funny Girl is a bit of a musical classic. The story is about the bitter-sweet life of Fanny Brice who rose from a music hall singer in Brooklyn to become a Broadway star. But it is not only her vocal talents and comic ability that make her story a fascinating one. She also endured a tempestuous relationship with gambler Nicky Arnstein.
Featuring some of the most iconic songs in musical theatre including ‘I’m the Greatest Star’, “People” and “Don’t Rain On My Parade”, the 1968 film starred Barbra Streisand and pretty much launched her career.
Currently the touring cast includes our very own Funny Girl Sheridan Smith who appeared in the sold out West End production along with Glasgow born Darius Campbell; Natasha J Brown, who recieved rave reviews when she had to step into Smith’s shoes for six weeks and Chris Peluso, who most recently broke hearts as American GI Chris Scott in Miss Saigon at the Prince Edward theatre, will play the lead roles at certain venues on the UK tour.
Funny Girl was written by Jule Styne (music ) and Bob Merrill (lyrics) with a book by Isobel Lennart from an original story by Miss Lennart, with revisions by Harvey Fierstein.
