Roddy Doyle’s The Commitments : The Saviours of Soul (to give it its full title) took more than two years to adapt by the author from his own best selling Booker prize winning novel.
It tells the story of Jimmy Rabbitte, a young working class music fan, who, after placing an advert in a music paper, begins to manage an unlikely bunch of amateurs and friends into an amazing live act – declaring it to be “the finest soul band Dublin has ever produced.”
The humour kicks in as the new band – The Commitments – get to know not only each other but also their instruments and proceed through early disastrous rehearsals to their first appearance in front of a paying audience.
