Dreamgirls Theatre Breaks in London
The hit show of 2017 has already opened and it is called Dreamgirls, with Glee’s Amber Riley taking the lead role. So book your Dreamgirls theatre breaks for a soul-tastic break in London now – because this one is selling out right through to February 2018!
Amazingly the multi award winning Dreamgirls has never been produced in the West End before – a fact that’s hard to believe after its stunning Broadway opening in 1981 and subsequent lavish film make-over in 2006 starring Beyonce and an Oscar-winning performance from a then unknown Jennifer Hudson.
So, London, it’s time to hold onto your hats for what London critics are already hailing as a massive hit.
Dreamgirls is a sensational master-piece in musical theatre with a fantastic musical score and a strong female presence in the cast.
Similarities have been drawn between the story of American all-girl group The Supremes and the Dreamgirls plot, as a trio of young black American women forge out a successful singing career from humble beginnings after winning a talent contest in Harlem in 1962.
The story ultimately centres around the lead singer of the Dreamettes, Effie White, played by Amber Riley who makes her West End debut, as she struggles to maintain her status in the group whilst competing with her best friend Deena, both romantically with their manager, Curtis, and professionally as Deena begins to receive more recognition than the other two group members.
The story is told mostly through song with many memorable tunes that you’ve probably heard, but never known from where they originated, including the heart-breaking And I Am Telling You I’m Not Going, One Night Only and, of course, Dreamgirls.
Casting news : Joing Amber Riley and making up the trio of girl-group, The Dreams, are British actress Ibinabo Jack (Legally Blonde The Musical and The Color Purple) as ‘peace-maker’ Lorrell Robinson and Liisi LaFontaine (finalist in US vocal talent show The Winner Is…) as Effie’s rival Deena Jones.
Taking the male supporting roles are Joe Aaron Reid (In The Heights), Tyrone Huntley (Memphis The Musical), Adam J Bernard (I Can’t Sing) and former EastEnders’ actor Nicholas Bailey.
