Gemma Arterton (The Duchess of Malfi, Made in Dagenham, Quantum of Solace) will star as one of the first and most acclaimed women to appear on the London stage: Nell Gwynn.
The play was on for a blink-and-you-miss-it run at Shakespeare’s Globe but will come to the Apollo Theatre for 12 weeks from 4 February 2016 with Arterton taking over the role from Gugu Mbatha-Raw.
Arterton made her professional debut at the Globe in 2007 as Rosaline in Love’s Labour’s Lost. She returned to appear as the Duchess of Malfi at its sister theatre, the Sam Wanamaker Playhouse, in 2014. Most recently she starred in Made in Dagenham – the stage musical adaptation by Dave Arnold of the film of the same name.
“Pretty Witty Nell” was the favoured mistress of Charles II. A “favoured” mistress! How many did he have?
