Well, no announcement should surprise me by now in the theatre profession, but Hunger Games the Musical… can this possibly true? Well, my friends it is and its coming to a purpose built theatre next to Wembley Arena supposedly this summer (2016), but no cast details have been announced and tickets are not yet on sale.
Production company Imagine Nation along co-producer’s Lionsgate Films promise to employ “innovative and immersive” staging techniques to bring the incredibly popular teenage fiction books by Suzanne Collins to stage.
It will be unique theatrical experience fuelled by the colossally successful Hunger Games film series which starred Oscar winner Jennifer Lawrence in the role of Katnis Evergreen.
For those of you living on the moon these last few years, The Hunger Games are a trilogy of books which depict a dystopian future world, Panem, with our heroine Katniss taking on the “cannot be touched” establishment of the Capital district and leading the other eleven down-trodden districts to revolution. The Hunger Games of the title refer to the annual savage battle to the death between rival districts to serve as a reminder of the Capital’s power.
Earlier in the year, Lionsgate revealed the production would boast “world-class production values and state-of-the-art technology [to] provide a uniquely immersive experience for fans around the world.”
Award-winning Broadway producer Robin de Levita, who is co-founder of Imagine Nation, said the company was “thrilled to be partnering with an innovative next generation studio like Lionsgate on a property that resonates so deeply with global audiences,” adding: “The theatre is a fantastic medium to bring the many meaningful layers of Suzanne Collins’ writing to life.”
