Following on from the success of last year’s phenominal production of Jesus Christ Superstar, Regent’s Park Open Air Theatre’s 2017 season revives the now multi-Olivier Award nominated musical about the last days of Jesus and his group of disciples who all ultimately betray him. In the 2016 production Declan Bennett took on the role of Jesus, but it is his co-star Tyronne Huntley, who portrayed the confused and complicated Judas, who gets on the shortlist for Best Actor in a Musical at this year’s Olivier’s – which are being held on Sunday 9th April .
Jesus Christ Superstar’s 2017 cast has yet to be announced, but director Timothy Sheader couldn’t go far wrong if he chose the same acter’s as last year! The show runs in Regent’s Park from 11th August to 16th September 2017 and is highly recommened by theatrebreaks.com.
However, we do know the cast of the Regents Park Open Air theatre’s 2017 season opener Leonard Bernstein’s On The Town. Based on an original concept by choreographer Jerrome Robbins (West Side Story, Fiddler on the Roof), the upbeat musical will star ex-Hollyoaks actor and BBC Strictly Come Dancing finalist Danny Mac as Gabey the role made famous by Gene Kelly in the 1949 film, which also starred a baby-faced Frank Sinatra. This wonderfully bright and sunny musical, in stark contrast to the afore-mentioned Superstar, follows the fortunes of three American sailors on 24 hour shore-leave in New York City and the three women that steal their hearts. Featuring well-known songs such as New York New York, Prehistoric Man and Come Up to My Place as well as breath-taking choreography, the musical opens on 19th May and is booking through to 1st July 2017.
Other productions this summer include a double dose of Dickens with A Tale of Two Cities and Oliver Twist Re-imagined for Everyone Six and Over.
