Theatre breaks for The Rover in Stratford upon Avon are no longer available
As one of the first English women to earn her living by her writing, Alphra Behn, was indeed a pioneer in her chosen profession. Often using the turbulent political times in which she lived as a basis for her plays and poems, The Rover, written in 1677, is probably one of her most famous works .
Exiled, three cavaliers fallen foul of Cromwell’s new England, meet up in a Spanish colony as carnival begins. Conveniently, three wealthy sisters having escaped their overbearing brother are also enjoying the carnival atmosphere. Chaos ensures as passions run high, lovers meet, men are conned and swords drawn.
Rich in comedy, seduction, intrigue and danger, The Rover is directed by Loveday Ingram.
